Wool and Cashmere Sweater Care: The Complete Guide to Washing, Drying, and Storing

Wool and cashmere fibres are nothing like cotton or synthetic blends. Each strand has a microscopic scale structure that can catch, felt, and lock together under heat, agitation, or harsh detergent. That's why a sweater that fit perfectly can come out of a hot wash looking suitable for a child.

Cashmere in particular is prized for its softness because the fibres are finer and more delicate than sheep's wool, which means it bruises easily under rough handling. Treat these garments gently and they'll reward you with years of wear; treat them like everyday laundry and you'll be shopping for a replacement by next winter.

Before you do anything, check the label. "Dry clean only" is not decorative — it's a genuine warning for certain blends, linings, or embellishments that won't survive water. "Hand wash cold" means the fibre can tolerate water but needs a gentle, controlled process.

Look out for symbols too: a hand in a basin means hand washing is safe, a circle means dry cleaning is required, and a crossed-out iron means skip the heat entirely. When in doubt, especially with vintage or unlabelled pieces, it's safer to assume dry cleaning is the better route.

Can you wash wool and cashmere sweaters at home? In most cases, yes — but only under the right conditions. Hand washing wool sweaters is the gold standard because you control the temperature, the movement, and the pressure applied to the fibres.

Machine washing is riskier. If your machine has a genuine wool cycle with a mesh bag and cold water, some sweaters can survive it. But standard cycles introduce too much agitation and spin force, which is precisely how cashmere sweater shrinkage happens. If you're unsure, hand washing or professional dry cleaning cashmere is always the lower-risk choice.

Fill a basin with lukewarm to cool water and a small amount of wool-specific detergent — never regular laundry powder, which is too alkaline for animal fibres. Submerge the sweater and gently press the water through it. Never rub, twist, or wring.

Let it soak for around ten minutes, then drain and refill with clean water to rinse out the soap. Press out excess water gently, supporting the garment's weight the whole time rather than lifting it by the shoulders, which stretches the fibres irreversibly.

What is the best way to dry a cashmere sweater? Lay it flat. This single step prevents more damage than almost any other part of the process. Place the damp sweater on a clean towel, roll the towel to absorb excess moisture, then reshape the sweater to its original dimensions on a dry towel or drying rack.

Keep it away from direct sunlight and radiators, both of which can cause uneven shrinkage and colour fading. If shrinkage has already happened, there's a fix: resoak the sweater in lukewarm water with a little hair conditioner or baby shampoo, then gently stretch it back to shape while damp and pin it in place until fully dry.

How do you get pilling off a wool sweater? A fabric comb or a dedicated pill-removal tool works best — glide it gently over the surface in one direction to lift bobbles without tearing the fibres. A disposable razor at a shallow angle also works in a pinch, provided you go slowly and carefully.

For odors, hang the sweater in fresh air rather than rewashing it every time; wool naturally resists smell more than most fabrics. Stains, however, are where professional dry cleaning earns its keep — oil-based marks and set-in spots often need solvents and expertise that home treatments simply can't match without risking the fibre.
